Winter activities on holiday at Lake Achensee
Lake Achensee offers more than just water sports, boat tours, and hiking. If you visit in winter, you’ll fall in love with the snow-covered Alps rising above the deep-blue lake. It’s the perfect backdrop for all your winter activities. What are you in the mood for today?
There are 100km of perfectly groomed winter hiking trails around Lake Achensee. As you walk among snow-dusted fir trees and sparkling white expanses, you’ll experience the magic of the cold season up close. Here are our two favourite winter hikes.
Walking time: 1.5 hours
Difficulty level: easy
Start your hike at the base station of the Rofan cable car, then head to Lake Achensee. Pass the Buchau boat dock and continue to the Prälatenhaus. From there, walk to Familienresort Buchau, through Maurach’s town centre, and back to the cable car station.

Hike along the shore of Lake Achensee all the way to Pertisau. From there, continue to the base station of the Karwendel cable car, passing by the Langlaufstüberl restaurant. You can either return the same way or take the bus for a more relaxed trip back.
Over 200km of perfectly groomed trails. For classic or skating style. Swing after swing, you’ll glide through the snowy landscape around Lake Achensee, all while enjoying stunning views of the deep-blue water below. Whether you’re an expert or a beginner, this is the place to experience some of the most beautiful cross-country skiing moments. It’s no wonder the Lake Achensee region proudly carries the Tyrolean Cross-Country Skiing Quality Seal. Best of all: One of the trails runs directly past Familienresort Buchau, so you can step right out of your hotel door and onto the ski trail in no time.
There are 4 natural toboggan runs at Lake Achensee, each between 1.3km and 4.8km long. That means: plenty of fast-paced tobogganing fun for both kids and adults! You can simply rent a toboggan at our sports shop. The following toboggan runs await you around Buchau:
- Achenkirch toboggan run, in the Christlum ski area, 3.5km long, no floodlights
- Zwölferkopf Pertisau, winding fun at Mt Zwölferkopf, right by the Karwendel cable car, 4.8km long, no floodlights
- Rodlhütte Pertisau: up with the Rodlexpress, then zoom down with plenty of speed on this 1.3km run with floodlights
- Maurach toboggan run, idyllic and winding, 1.5km long, with floodlights
