Adventure, history, and experiences at Lake Achensee

Soar through the air like an eagle. Free, easy, and daring. With the AIRROFAN Skyglider, you’ll experience pure action and adrenaline. Your flight starts at Mt Gschöllkopf, 2,040 metres above sea level. Then, on this eagle-like four-seater glider, you’ll speed downhill at up to 80km/h, descending 200 vertical metres. Safety is paramount, of course. Kids aged 10 and up, and at least 1.30 metres tall, can enjoy the AIRROFAN Skyglider ride.

What was originally meant to be a home for vintage tractors gradually grew into a full-fledged museum dedicated to local cultural heritage and documenting traditional ways of working. The exhibition space spans 8,000m² and includes sections devoted to local societies – like the volunteer fire brigade and mountain rescue team. You’ll also find nostalgic highlights such as the Achensee railway, the stern of a 120-year-old Achensee steamboat, and a collection of 500 handcrafted dolls. The origin of Tyrolean Shale Oil® goes way back. Way, way back. To be precise, 180 million years ago, when the supercontinent Pangaea was breaking apart, volcanic activity caused climate changes, and various organisms settled on the sea floor. These eventually fossilised into oil shale. Today, this oil shale can be found in the Bächental, a side valley of the Karwendel mountains. Tyrolean Shale Oil® has a high sulphur content, which gives it its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The product line includes items designed for skin and hair care as well as therapeutic uses. How did our ancestors live and work around Lake Achensee? You can experience it authentically at the Local History Museum Sixenhof. The farm was first documented in 1361 and rebuilt in 1810 after an arson attack. Today, the local history museum occupies the site with 21 rooms, including a shoemaker’s workshop, a weaving room, and a blacksmith’s forge – all filled with original exhibits. They vividly illustrate the lives of fishermen, hunters, firefighters, and shipping crews from days gone by. Take a journey back in time.

They’re fluffy, friendly, and have irresistibly big, round eyes: the alpacas at Lake Achensee. On a farm in Achenkirch, Liesa cares for many of these shaggy animals and also rents them out as hiking companions. Each day, she and her husband lead up to two small-group hikes. The alpacas are very accustomed to children, making them perfect companions for the whole family. By the way, Liesa’s farm is also home to pygmy goats and rabbits, who love to be petted.
